FOUNDING PIONEERS Excerpted from History of Buffalo County by Kessinger, 1888
Early in 1848, there were at Twelve Mile Bluff, now Alma, three persons, all of them from Switzerland. Neither of these three had at that time any family, and Berni used to make fun of their isolation.
Victor Probst, from Biberist in the Canton of Sleure, a carpenter or joiner by trade Joseph Berni of the same place, a cooper by trade, a soldier of the Mexican war John C Waecker from Unter-Hallau in the Canton of Shaffhausen

EARLY SETTLERS Excerpted from History of Buffalo County by Kessinger, 1888
Initially, a limit was drawn at the year 1865 for Early Settlers, which is about 25 years after the first known settlement, and 11 years after the actual organization of the county.
The list of Early Settlers is intended as a record of those who happened to make their home in Buffalo County during the period of its incipeincy and development, whether they are here yet, or have departed. For convenience and perspicuity I have divided the subject into four classes:
Class I |
|
From 1839 to 1855 inclusive |
Class II |
|
From1856 to 1860 inclusive |
Class III |
|
From 1861 to 1865 inclusive |
Class IV |
|
After 1865, which contains a few names accidentally reported beyond the limit above mentioned |
Biographical Index of History of Buffalo County, Kessinger, 1888
WEB EDITOR'S NOTE: This list of Early Settlers prepared by Mr Kessinger for publication in 1888 does not include any women. In addition, it is based on where a settler "first settled". Many of the early settlers of Buffalo County settled in one location in the county and later moved to another.
