Almost 350 citizens of Buffalo County, Wisconsin served in the Union forces during the War of the Rebellion ... the Civil War.

Most were new to this country, many spoke little English, a few received military training in their homeland, all heeded the call of President Abraham Lincoln when he asked for volunteers.
